I started writing songs in 1972, when accompanied by Doug, I bought my Yamaha G-85A classical guitar at ‘Music World’. It cost $60. It’s the rhythm guitar you hear on some of the songs. There’s a world of music in that wonderful instrument. With “Once Around the Park”, released September 15, 2018, people ask, “When and where did these songs come from?” The answer lies in a myriad of musical experiences one has throughout life, many of which are subtle and some impressive events. Some of mine are: Mum and Dad told, while on their honeymoon, of seeing Judy Garland in London, June 1947; Dad singing “Skye Boat Song” at bedtime; the radio was on; Mum asking my brother Sandy to sing Dream, Dream, Dream by the Everly Brothers; they bought that “Little Pink Record Player”; my parent’s Saturday night house parties hearing Sam’s ‘Scottish Soldier’, Uncle Doug’s ‘Desert Song’, Dad sings “If I Loved You”, folk doing their party piece; show tunes played endlessly: Carousel, Oklahoma, South Pacific; My Fair Lady, The King and I, etc., etc; musical invasions; The Small Faces; Sandy bought me a Gene Krupa album to fuel my love of drumming; he lined up all night for Beatles tickets and bought cool records; buying The Kinks EP in a Musselburgh music shop in 1966; Uncle Geordie’s ukulele and piano; The Sheas; Georgie and Harry’s stereo; Doug’s avant guard musical taste; going to ‘Walkers’ with Johnny ‘Q’; his and Johnny P’s scholarly pursuit of guitar; seeing Buddy Rich several times, talking to him; and with Sandy and Doug, leaving Rich’s show at Massey Hall to the Colonial…pow!… John Lee Hooker; Randy Newman; Ren’s intriguing musical taste; Weather Report; Dave Wright’s set list is infinite!; all those Conservatory notes come back for Marie; The Rexdale Boys have extensive musical knowledge; Will’s saxophone; seeing and hearing James Brown; seeing Ayron Copeland conduct Appalachian Spring; school dances; rink music; in my lifetime the various forms in which music is delivered; Hip Hop; explosion of new singers and bands presenting new musical ideas; classic rock for Spencer; the car radio is always on; meeting musician and teacher Brian Lahaie and the list goes on and on and on…
